The 8 essential elegant pieces in your summer suitcase

Let's go for the period that we are all impatiently waiting for, the summer holidays!  Here we are on the starting blocks ready to hit the road to enjoy, with family or friends, the beach, sightseeing, restaurants against a backdrop of incredible sunsets.

But one of the conditions for a successful stay is of course to prepare your suitcase well!  First of all, be sure that the size is adapted to the length of the stay: Large, medium or small model?  It is essential to make the right choice.

In order to avoid ending up with a suitcase that is too bulky and too heavy, (which is anything but practical), it is better to opt for a nice medium suitcase.  Bet on a robust, lightweight model with resistant closures and wheels to avoid disasters during transport.  In addition, a medium-sized suitcase allows you to go to the essentials and avoid carrying lots of clothes and accessories that you will not ultimately wear!

 Prepare your suitcase well

As much for these gentlemen the subject is quite futile, as much for us women it is the basis!  Leaving with a slew of clothes and realizing on arrival that they do not correspond to our needs is a guaranteed nervous breakdown:

 – “Damn, I forgot the belt that goes with this dress, I’m going to look like a bag”,

 – “This T-shirt has no chic, I should have taken a shirt”,

 – “Why didn’t I think to bring a jacket?  In the evening at the edge of the beach, it is cool and I am freezing… Suddenly, my colorful sarong will act as a cape even if it means looking like a Peruvian tourist”

Brief !  We find ourselves badly dressed, badly styled … The obsession of all women concerned about their appearance.  Admittedly, it's relaxed, we're on vacation but not to the point of neglecting ourselves!  You can't even count on the possibility of shopping because the holiday budget is tight and does not necessarily provide for unnecessary expenses... And above all, you have what you need at home!

 The solution ?

 – Never pack your suitcase at the last moment but do it at least 3 days before.  This delay allows you to make any last-minute purchases,

 – Taking your time during the preparation, quickly and well is not always compatible,

 – Compose outfits with essential elegant pieces that you will wear for sure to avoid an overloaded suitcase.

 How ?

 – Draw as you go from your dressing room the clothes you want to take,

 – Put them on your bed to see them better,

 – If you haven't worn them for a long time and are unsure of the size, try them on.  It would be a shame to bring clothes that are too big or too small,

 – Add the shoes, jewelry and other accessories needed to complete your different looks,

 – Fold and store your combos in your suitcase.  When you arrive on site, all you have to do is hang your outfits in the dressing room to smooth them out.

By doing so, you make sure you take full advantage of your vacation: No wasting time or hassle, your outfits are already ready.  The result: an impeccable look.

What are the 8 essential elegant pieces in your summer suitcase after 50 years

There is a big difference between the suitcase of our 20s and that of our 50s and over.  Dresses and short shorts, bikinis, tank tops, sleeveless or backless T-shirts were among our essentials.  Since then, water has flowed under the bridges... Our tastes have evolved, our bodies have changed but we have adapted...

We focus more on comfort, style and looks that combine elegance and modernity.  Without following trends at all costs, we are looking for ideas for summer outfits that above all enhance our silhouette with that little extra that allows us to stand out.

We use and abuse basic linen or cotton, taking care to bet on qualitative pieces.  To upgrade our outfits, accessories have become our best allies.  The pep colors have also integrated our dressing room and it is during the holidays that we let go the most: floral and tropical prints put us in the summer atmosphere.

 1/ A floral blouse

The floral blouse (shirt or tunic) is the healthy-looking piece par excellence.  With our tanned complexion, we appreciate wearing pep colors.  With bermuda shorts or plain pants, it is ideal.  However, floral prints are not always successful and tend to memorize us.  The choice of print is therefore essential to be sure not to look like wallpaper from the 70s.

Danielle Engel, a designer from Montpellier whom I have presented to you on several occasions, has created a pretty fuchsia pink floral blouse this season (reference Gwen).  Bright and elegant, I find it ideal for the season: a V-neck, 3/4 puff sleeves adorned with ruffles, a lightweight fabric that's comfortable to wear and wrinkle-resistant.

In addition, this blouse was made in France and it is a great pleasure for me to wear pieces by French designers.

 2/ A polo shirt

Among the tops you will take, opt for a polo shirt.  Iconic piece of the sportswear wardrobe, you will wear it as much with chinos as with jeans or Bermuda shorts.  Its collar, buttoned closure, piqué cotton fabric and straight cut ensure an elegant look for a bike ride, going for a drink with friends or during your tourist visits.

At Polo Ralph Lauren, Gant, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, polo is king.  White, black or bright colours, it's up to you to make the right choice.

3/ White or beige pants (or both)

We all appreciate the elegance of white and beige pants.  These neutral colors go with everything but, on the pretext that they are messy, we would tend to avoid them.  However, they are two essential elegant pieces of our summer wardrobe.

In linen or cotton, white or beige pants are always very pleasant to wear.  Associated with a shirt, a tunic, a T-shirt or a polo shirt, a pair of sandals, espadrilles or sneakers, you will always be sure to sport a chic and relaxed look.

The trend is for wide or even very wide cut pants: Palazzo, carrot, paper bag.  However, the chino remains the all-purpose model.  Discover inspiration for white pants on the Place des Tendances website.

4/ A linen shirt or jacket

I know what you're thinking: linen wrinkles!  therefore not practical for the holidays... But what a pity to deprive oneself of pieces as chic as a shirt or a linen jacket... Moreover, linen is the ideal material for the summer: natural, it absorbs humidity and prevents  bad smells.

The solution ?  Ask the reception of your hotel to lend you the necessary to iron.  If you rent a house or if you are invited to friends, the problem will not arise.  Relax with the crinkle of linen, to wear it is to affirm your taste for relaxed elegance.

On the BODEN website, you will find a wide selection of quality linen shirts.

 5/ Shorts

We are going to tackle a sensitive subject: the length of our clothes after 50 years.  My opinion belongs only to me and I am aware that it is not that of everyone.

Indeed, I am one of those who think that, after a certain age, skirts, dresses, short shorts are no longer suitable.  When I come across photos in magazines or Instagram posts where women over 60 are wearing too short, I find it vulgar and not chic at all.

Of course, many fifty-somethings have legs that make some young girls green, but it's not about aesthetics, ignoring diktats or assuming one's silhouette.  It is to be in adequacy with its age and its pace.

Short shorts to go to the beach or by the pool, YES, but going out shopping or for a walk is very average.  But everyone does what they want...

The solution ?  Adopt Bermuda shorts!  Its length above the knee is ideal.  In cotton, with or without darts, worn with a shirt, a polo shirt or a T-shirt, it will give you a look that is both chic and relaxed, everything we aspire to during the holidays.  These fifties and sixties are the best example!

 6/ A long dress

Wearing a long dress in summer gives a bohemian chic air to our look and we love it!  Associated with a basket, a pair of sandals or wedge espadrilles, we are ready to go on an excursion to discover the most beautiful tourist sites.

Wrap dresses or belted shirt dresses are the most rewarding cuts for the figure.  If you prefer to camouflage some curves, opt for a flared cut but not too much.  On the ANTHROPOLOGIE site, you will find models of original long dresses.

Question accessories, wear your prettiest bracelets (do not hesitate to accumulate them) and your sunglasses, look like a star on vacation guaranteed.

 7/ A chic dress

Holidays are an opportunity to treat yourself to romantic evenings.  Why not take one of the dresses that make you irresistible, which I will call essential elegant pieces in your summer suitcase.  Without going as far as the gala dress, opt for the chic and simplicity of the always glamorous and feminine little black dress.

Bet on a straight-cut model or a wrap model, a light fabric, a pair of high-heeled sandals, pretty refined jewelry and you're ready to spend an unforgettable evening.

 8/ A blazer

Holidays are mostly synonymous with sunshine and heat, but depending on the destination, temperatures can get so cold that you have to wear a jacket.

The blazer is one of the essential elegant pieces to display a casual chic look.  We wear it as much with jeans, chinos, Bermuda shorts, wide trousers, a midi or long dress, a long skirt.  It therefore adapts to all the styles of our summer outfits.  Bet on neutral colors such as navy blue, white, beige or sky blue.  However, a colorful blazer will pep up your outfit and highlight your tanned skin.

As for accessories, don't forget to bring: belts, sunglasses, a hat, a scarf, a soft basket, a clutch for the evening and of course, costume jewelry to brighten up your looks.

And you, what are the essential elegant pieces of your summer suitcase?
