Casual chic look ideas for women over 50

First and foremost, it's important to remember that women over 50 (including myself) experienced their adolescence and/or early years as a young woman during the 1980s. wearing sophisticated outfits was fashionable and not considered old-fashioned or overly classic. Pencil skirts, trouser suits, structured blazers, leather, high and marked waists, pep colors and sequins were omnipresent in fashionistas' wardrobes. Result: a flamboyant and elegant look.

40 years later, no one has forgotten the incredible looks of Joan Collins or Linda Evans in Dynasty, the cult series of the 80s: glam and glam! Their outfits were synonymous with power, imposing women and we loved that!

In 2023, working girl suits like Mélanie Griffith or cocktail dresses in the Pretty Woman version are no longer really successful. Goodbye sophistication and hello elegant casualness. Dress codes have evolved to allow modern women to feel more comfortable in their attire.

Thus, the casual chic style has imposed itself in the dressing room of women aged 50 and over, an excellent compromise when you are concerned about your look.

What is the casual chic style?

The casual chic style consists of mixing casual pieces with more elegant pieces. This combination allows you to create looks that are chic, feminine and comfortable. Of course, it can be adopted at any age, but I find it particularly suitable for women aged 50 and over.

To master it perfectly, all you need to do is:

to boost your outfits by accessorizing them with one or more sophisticated pieces such as a pair of shoes, a bag, a belt, a jewel, a scarf, it's the detail that will change everything,
to opt for cuts and lengths adapted to their style, their age and their silhouette, one of the conditions for displaying a modern and chic look,
to rely on quality fabrics for an impeccable finish.
Result: the casual chic look has only advantages! The image you give off is in tune with the times and totally matches your personality: a confident woman, comfortable in her clothes, effortlessly elegant and above all fulfilled! In short, a modern “fifties and more” who has mastered her style and assumes her age!

What are the essential pieces to create a casual chic look?

Creating a dressing room with timeless basics is already a good start.  Among this list of essential parts, which ones do you already have?  If the answer is all, congratulations!

 - several jeans, it's the ideal pants to have effortless style!  Take the time to try on different models to be sure to acquire the ones that perfectly match your figure,

 – a denim shirt with pearly press studs: over a T-shirt, under a sweater or a sweatshirt, it modernizes your looks,

 – a denim jacket, wear it over a t-shirt, a dress, under a coat or a trench coat.  The iconic Levi's is the one I recommend,

 – black dress pants, if you like loose shapes, the Palazzo cut is a good choice.  Otherwise, opt for the cigarette or clip shape,

 – black jeans and dark gray, gray is a color that goes perfectly with camel, the chic color par excellence,

 – beige pants and white pants, no fabric too thin to avoid transparency,

 – an easy-to-wear straight cut dress: in a less formal version, shift it with a denim jacket and sneakers,

 – a white t-shirt, pair it with a navy blue blazer and add a chunky-knit necklace to energize your look,

 – a white poplin shirt, straight or oversize, you will wear it on all occasions,

 – a cashmere sweater, sky blue and/or camel, beige, casual chic appreciates soft and neutral colors,

 – a sailor top, wear it under your trench coat for a modern casual chic look!

 – a navy blue and/or black blazer, the must have of the casual chic dressing room,

 – a trench coat, bet on the beige color for the touch of elegance,

 – a long camel or light gray coat, shades that easily match everything,

 – a pair of white sneakers, select a leather model with discreet logo.  CONVERSE sneakers are also a safe bet.  Timeless, they have a rejuvenating effect.

 – a pair of Chelsea boots in brown or beige suede, these are the essential casual chic boots,

 – a pair of loafers, these comfortable and stylish shoes bring a touch of casual elegance to your looks.

Accessories, the details that change everything

 Accessories are also important:

 – leather belts : navy blue, black, camel, red,

 – steel watches: one gold and one silver,

 - iconic leather bags whose color and style will match each of your outfits,

 – A silk scarf is timeless and always elegant. If your means allow it, treat yourself to a top-of-the-range square instead of several ordinary models,

 – jewelry in stainless steel or silver, you will keep them for a long time and always in very good condition,

 – a hat, a beret.

It's up to you to combine these pieces with one goal: to create a timeless and chic look.

How to boost your casual chic look?

 - Instead of a basic blazer, opt for a model with a crest or add a pretty brooch,

 – if your look needs pep, combine colorful accessories (shoes, belt, bag): red, green, royal blue, pink, but without excess,

 - the monochromatic look is synonymous with elegance and to avoid becoming monotonous, try to bring contrast by combining a bag and a belt in a darker shade,

 – Treat yourself to a leopard belt, bag and shoes, this timeless pattern affirms your femininity with elegance and modernity. However, wear them separately (or two maxi pieces if the patterns are identical and discreet) to avoid too much,

 – add a twilly around the handles of your bag,

 – if your morphology allows it, belt your jackets,

 - add a sweater on the shoulders, taking care to match its color to that of your accessories,

 – bet on a large mesh necklace like those of Francine Bramli or a sublime long necklace from Modern Eves or Poggi, these are details that illuminate and stylize your look,

 – don't forget your sunglasses, they are essential to protect you but also to complete your classy woman's look,

 - try to find little-seen pieces in order to stand out. Get out of your comfort zone by wearing colorful clothes, brands unknown in France (take advantage of stays abroad to treat yourself). Go in search of rather confidential designers or wear vintage. You will be both original and unique! Take a look at the LOCKER COLLECTIVE eshop, you will certainly find some nuggets!

Casual chic look for women over 50: what to avoid

 – Pieces that look 20 years older: certain details, prints, cuts and materials tend to memorize. They weigh down the style and the look so avoid them,

 – Dressing too big or too baggy: This is the case for many women who find it difficult to accept their new figure at menopause! But hiding your imperfections doesn't mean looking like a bag. A slightly fitted garment will enhance you much more than a model that is too large. On the contrary, too big accentuates the curves.

Case in point: Just last month, I was in the cabin at the Breal boutique in Urrugne while a customer was trying on a very cool jumpsuit that was too big for her. Impossible not to advise her, it was too obvious (professional deformation!).

After convincing her to try the smaller size despite her lack of conviction, she finally admitted it was a good decision! Indeed, her look was totally different: refined and more elegant silhouette!

Black close to the face: I'm a fan of black but for a few years, I've avoided wearing it too close to the face. It tends to mark the features and darken the complexion. The solution ? Opt for a V-neck embellished with a necklace or a colorful scarf.
